i've already twittered about these guys today but i need to spread the word.
i heard 'death to los campesinos!' on 6 music yesterday (alan carr standing in for stephen merchant. have to say alan carr is one of the most annoying people on the planet but whoever created his playlist did a damn good job) and fell in love. so today i visited their website and listened/watched everything they offer. they are such good fun, quirky, bonkers lyrics, interesting cartoon videos. they are that oft-searched thing; a breath of fresh air. remind me a bit of belle and sebastian, which can be no bad thing.
neither did it escape my attention the little homage to the pixies there. more points.
and the best bit? they're playing up the road, in a uni dive, in february, so will try to get tickets and persuade YummyHubby(tm) to come and bop along with me.

if you're really brave, join me after the jump for some ranting about the clueless grauniad music journo who reviewed them...
so i had a quick perusal of what others think of them and was most disappointed in the grauniad's review. the reviewer is even more pedantic than me, picking up on the fact that they should have an upside down exclamation mark at the start of the name to be absolutely correct. which is true, but people tend these days to skip it, especially in informal situations like email and IM etc, so it's really not a big deal. and who cares? not the point. listen to the sodding music.
so he did. and then described them as being so twee as to make talulah gosh sound like a thrash metal band. no. no band, other than a few groups nobody who didn't get the sha-la-la fanzine flexidiscs will have heard of, is anywhere near as twee as talulah gosh. and to add insult to injury he says, knowing that most readers won't recognise the name talulah gosh, 'ask your mother'. i don't think anyone who was into talulah gosh back in the day is quite old enough to have a teenage kid.
let's put the record straight. they're not twee. just cos one of the guys has a monkees haircut and the girl has a sweet voice does not an eighties anorak band make. they're a bit too unpredicable, and there's a hard edge to the lyrics, they're not all sugary sweet. the man is a fool.
hmmph.
